A partnership between the Krannert School of Management and the University's Council for Manager Development program is helping Purdue employees transform their understanding of management functions and managerial skill application.

CMD, a professional development program for administrative and professional employees on the West Lafayette campus, helps participants gain knowledge about the University and its functions, broaden their grasp of complex and interdisciplinary issues, and establish relationships with staff from different areas of campus. Last year, Carrie Hanson, training manager in Human Resources, worked with a CMD alumni task force to evaluate the program and recommend improvements.

One recommendation involved adding a leadership development component to expand participants' managerial skills. For that, organizers turned to the Krannert School and its Applied Management Principles (AMP) program. Earlier this month, a special AMP program was conducted for 22 CMD participants.

Incorporating AMP into the professional development program for employees seemed like a natural fit to Hanson.

"The robust curriculum and access to Krannert's incredible faculty aligned perfectly to our needs," she says. "We believe our CMD participants will gain a holistic understanding of the management function and how to apply specific managerial skills within the workplace."

For almost two decades, Krannert has offered the two-week AMP, during which faculty provide business professionals and Purdue PhD students with a general understanding of business concepts. Coursework includes accounting, business law, change management, economics, finance, human resources, leadership, marketing, operations and strategic management.

Sally Lutes, director of business development for Krannert Executive Education Programs, says the timing of this month's incorporation of AMP into CMD was perfect.

"When we discussed the CMD group's needs, it became clear that the Applied Management Principles program would be a great fit," Lutes says.

"The CMD program is two years in length, and the AMP program occurs at the midpoint. It will allow participants to come in to the program having worked together for a year, and then become equipped to use the management knowledge they gained as they work on their culminating project."

Lee Morrison, assistant director of residential life, says lessons learned through the Krannert program will help him lead improvement in the University.

"I was particularly interested in the topics of motivation and management behavior," Morrison says. "In order to make Purdue a better place, we must learn how to influence people to change."

David Wilson, Purdue's trademark licensing director, pointed to the business law and marketing sessions as being most applicable to his current role.

"It was a great opportunity for me to learn, and I learned how to create better learning opportunities for our team," he says.

Drew Weintraut, director of corporate relations for the College of Engineering, says the two-week program helped him broaden his views of how the University operates.

"As we look at all aspects of Purdue, I learned to become a better manager of resources as well as personnel. I think it will, in turn, make me a better resource for the University. I feel very valued as a result of the program," Weintraut says.
