Service-learning journals available through Jetpack

February 4, 2014

Two new service-learning reflection journals are available through Purdue's Jetpack mobile application. These academic tools were created to help students with service-learning and academic community service assignments and projects.

One of the journals, titled Service-Learning Reflection Journal, provides a guide for service-learning projects that may last from a few days to a few weeks. It offers a quantitative assessment for the beginning and the end of the service-learning project to measure ethical leadership, cultural competence and community engagement. The journal consists of reflection assignments to help prepare for a service-learning project, during the project and at the conclusion of the project.

The second journal, the International Service Learning Reflection Journal, is specifically created for international study abroad courses and alternative break programs. It provides pre-entry assignments and re-entry assignments to support and encourage a rich reflective process. The journal also contains a quantitative assessment for the beginning and end of the project. The assessment, also known as the Public Affairs Scale, can be used for research purposes, measurement outcome and students' own self-assessment.

The Jetpack app is available at the iPhone App Store and the Android market. Users also can view the material online using desktop computers.

Once students have downloaded the journals onto their smartphones or tablet devices, they will have 24/7 access to the journals. Students can add notes to the journals and email those notes to themselves, making it an efficient tool for travel.

The Service-Learning Reflection Journal is available at www.purdue.edu/jetpack/Catalog/Collect/409. The International Service Learning Reflection Journal is available at www.purdue.edu/jetpack/Catalog/Collect/408.
