Screening of film 'Girl Rising' set for Wednesday

February 17, 2014

A screening of the film "Girl Rising," about injustice and education worldwide, followed by a response from a longtime advocate for women in south India, will be held on Wednesday (Feb. 19).

The event will begin at 6 p.m. in Lawson Computer Science Building, Room B155. The organizers at Purdue are the Office of Programs for Study Abroad and the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program.

The film, written and directed by Academy Award-nominated director Richard E. Robbins, spotlights the stories of nine girls born into unforgiving circumstances in various countries as told by noted writers from those countries. The film focuses on the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to change a girl and the world. Actresses, including Cate Blanchett, Selena Gomez, Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep, narrate the film.

Beena Sebastian, chairperson of the Cultural Academy for Peace, and Alicia Decker, assistant professor of history and women's studies at Purdue, will offer responses to the film and pose questions to stimulate critical thinking about the status of girls and women in the Global South.
