Center for Healthy Living weight management program to begin Jan. 30

January 23, 2014

Participants in the Center for Healthy Living's new weight management program will have the opportunity to work with a variety of health care experts as they explore techniques to lose weight or keep from gaining weight.

"There are many aspects to weight management, including everything from how weight affects our health to nutrition information to tips and tricks that help us change how we eat," says Millie Fenneman, the center's practice administrator. "The Center for Healthy Living has experts in all of these areas, and we're bringing them together for this program."

Fenneman says that program participants will have access to a registered dietitian, health coaches and an employee assistance counselor.

The program is free and open to all benefits-eligible faculty and staff. Spouses and same-sex domestic partners covered on a Purdue medical plan are also eligible for the program.

Participants will meet each Thursday from noon to 12:50 p.m., beginning Jan. 30 and running through April 17. The location of the program will depend on the number of people who enroll.

Those wishing to participate should call Fenneman at 49-45505 by Monday (Jan. 27).

"The program will help individuals manage their weight to stay healthy and avoid illness and health complications," Fenneman says. "It's all about having a good quality of life."

The new weight management program will replace the Weight Watchers at Work program that Human Resources (HR) has supported for the past few years. "The Rec Sports Center has been gracious to run the program on campus while the Center for Healthy Living has been developing this replacement program," Fenneman says. The current Weight Watchers at Work program through the Rec Sports Center is the final one that HR will be sponsoring.

In addition to the center's new group weight management program, one-on-one health coaching for weight management is available through the center. Individuals who are interested in meeting with a health coach should call the center at 49-40111 to make an appointment.
