Purdue VP Buckius to testify before congressional panel Wednesday
November 11, 2013
Richard Buckius, vice president for research, will testify Wednesday morning (Nov. 13) in Washington before a congressional panel reviewing the reauthorization of the America COMPETES Act.
Buckius will testify at 10 a.m. ET before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science, Technology and Space Subcommittee on Research and Technology. The House is considering passage of the Frontiers in Innovation, Research, Science, and Technology (FIRST) Act of 2013. The law would require experiments funded by the NSF to meet at least one of six criteria: economic competitiveness, health and welfare, scientific literacy, partnerships between academia and industry, promotion of scientific progress, and national defense.
The FIRST Act would reauthorize the America COMPETES Act of 2007, which aims to invest in innovation through research and development and to improve the competitiveness of the United States.
Buckius will stress that federally funded research in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields is critical for national economic competitiveness.
