Purdue University Teaching Academy inducts 13

October 10, 2013

The Purdue University Teaching Academy welcomed 13 new members in an induction and recognition ceremony on Wednesday (Oct. 9).

The Teaching Academy was developed in 1996 to provide a means to elevate teaching and learning at Purdue, and to recognize outstanding faculty and staff who contribute to the learning environment. The first induction ceremony was in 1997. Since that time, more than 200 faculty and instructors have been recognized and inducted into the Teaching Academy.

This year's 11 fellows and two associate fellows were nominated by their college or school based upon their outstanding contribution to teaching and learning, and reviewed by their peers in the Teaching Academy. The inductees for 2013 are:

* Eric Barker, medicinal chemistry and molecular pharmacology.
* Karen Foli, nursing.
* Peter Hollenbeck, biological sciences.
* George Hollich, psychological sciences.
* Sonia Lasher-Trapp, earth, atmospheric, and planetary sciences.
* Fred Mannering, civil engineering.
* Jeffrey Rhoads, mechanical engineering.
* Marcy Towns, chemistry.
* David Umulis, agricultural and biological engineering.
* Carrie Wachter Morris, educational studies.
* Mariko Wei, Japanese and linguistic arts.
* Samar Khirallah, basic medical sciences.
* Laura Young, political science.

Working closely with the Center for Instructional Excellence (CIE), the Teaching Academy also serves as a cadre of experienced teachers and educators that can be a resource to new teaching faculty or faculty who have an interest in learning or trying different techniques used by academy members. The Teaching Academy website will be expanded to provide points of contact for any of the members of the Teaching Academy who can serve as mentors, advisors or experienced guides for other faculty at the University.
