Purdue community invited to public service for provost emeritus Haas

November 12, 2013

The Purdue community is being invited to join the family of the late Felix Haas, Purdue provost and professor emeritus, as they celebrate his life at a public service on Saturday (Nov. 16), according to the Office of the Board of Trustees. Haas, 92, died on July 16.

The public service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Thomas Duncan Hall, 619 Ferry St., Lafayette.

Haas joined the University in 1961 and served Purdue for more than 40 years as a professor, head of the Division of Mathematical Sciences, the first dean of the School of Science and later as provost.

Among Haas' many significant contributions was the formation of the Department of Computer Science. In addition to the Department of Computer Science, Haas was involved with the establishment of the Department of Statistics and what is now known as the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences.

After retiring as provost in 1986, Haas returned to Purdue to teach before retiring in 1991.

Purdue dedicated Felix Haas Hall, formerly the Computer Science Building, in recognition of Haas in 2006.
