December 9, 2013
President Mitch Daniels received the Indiana Society of Chicago's "Hoosier of the Year" award on Saturday (Dec. 7) at the group's annual dinner. The award is given to a person who, within their career, has served the state of Indiana with grace and distinction.
Past recipients of the "Hoosier of the Year" award are former Chicago White Sox pitcher Tommy John, a Terre Haute native, and former U.S. Rep. Lee H. Hamilton.
The Indiana Society of Chicago was founded in 1905 by George Ade, humorist, newspaperman and Purdue alumnus; John T. McCutcheon, political cartoonist and Purdue alumnus; and Edward M. Holloway, court clerk in Chicago at the turn of the century.
The mission of the society is to celebrate, promote and support the state of Indiana and its citizens and institutions. In 1997, the society responded to a critical need for financial assistance to deserving students and formed a foundation to provide scholarships to Chicago-area men and women attending colleges and universities in Indiana.
