Three departments win inaugural Presidential Safety Award

Three Purdue departments received the inaugural Presidential Safety Award at the Annual Safety Chair Meeting held in late March.

The Presidential Safety Award is presented on a discretionary basis to individuals and departments that prioritize safety in their daily activities. President Mitch Daniels was in attendance with Carol Shelby, senior director of environmental health and public safety, to present the awards.

The following groups were honored with the award:

* The School of Materials Engineering received the award for increased student and research safety through the school's peer review safety program for department laboratories.

Presidential Safety Award Zucrow Labs

Presidential Safety Award recipient: Maurice J. Zucrow Laboratories.

* Maurice J. Zucrow Laboratories received the award for their enhancements in research laboratory safety, including their willingness to prioritize safety considerations, even when this approach required the temporary discontinuation of laboratory research work.

* The Purdue University Police Department received the award for the quick apprehension of the assault and burglary suspects in the fall of 2012.

The Presidential Safety Award will be given on an annual basis every spring at the Safety Chair Meeting.
