A recently released mobile application provides in-depth information about Purdue's buildings and landmarks, student life offerings and campus history to anyone with a smartphone or tablet.

Called Purdue Campus Tour, the free application -- or "app" -- was released in April for Android and iOS devices. Purdue's Office of Marketing and Media developed it as an additional tour service offered through the Purdue Welcome Center.

The app includes photos and text about each tour location, as well as building and department phone numbers, websites, directions and social media presences, says Mary King, senior director of customer relationship marketing. It replaces the tour information offered in the University's official iOS application.

"The information in the app can be accessed by prospective students who are thousands of miles away from West Lafayette, or it can be accessed by those on campus now," King says. "The information is meant to appeal to everyone with an interest in knowing more about the campus-scape at Purdue."

The app provides tours of north campus, south campus and athletics facilities. Most Purdue buildings are covered in one of the tours.

The north campus tour includes, for example, Purdue Memorial Union, Marriott Hall, the Bell Tower and Memorial Mall. The south campus tour includes the College of Veterinary Medicine, Pao Hall, Dauch Alumni Center, Discovery Park and the Purdue Airport. The athletics tour includes Ross-Ade Stadium, Mackey Arena and other facilities.

Those using the app on campus can turn on a location-enabled feature that highlights buildings and landmarks as the user walks near them, King says.

In addition to the campus tours, the app offers a section of information about student life, which includes details about the Purdue University Student Health Center (PUSH), the Córdova Recreational Sports Center and dining services.

A section about Purdue history, tradition and points of pride offers details about campus mainstays such as the Boilermaker Special and Purdue Pete in addition to Purdue's reputation as a cradle of astronauts.

Search for "Purdue Campus Tour" in the iOS App Store to download the app.

The tour app is integrated with the University's general application for iOS. When users choose the "tours" option in the University app, they will be prompted to download the Purdue Campus Tour app. Once the Purdue Campus Tour app is installed it will launch directly within the Purdue app.

Available by searching for "Purdue University" in the iOS App Store, the University app recently received an update at the beginning of April, says Martin Sickafoose, director of digital marketing.

The app now includes links to Purdue’s Campus Tour app, the 5 Students Who website, online information board, merchandise page and donor page, where users can donate to the University directly from their mobile devices.

Sickafoose says the University and campus tour apps allow busy students, staff, faculty and others to experience Purdue in a convenient way.

"These apps' goal is to extend the Boilermaker experience to anyone with an interest in Purdue and a mobile device," Sickafoose says. "No matter where they're located -- whether it's on campus or across the globe -- we want the apps' users to see Purdue as the vibrant, interactive and inspiring campus that it is."
