Entomology to celebrate centennial with 'The Insect Play'
April 9, 2013
The Department of Entomology will continue its centennial celebration this week with performances of "The Insect Play" by Karel and Josef Capek.
The Department of Entomology in collaboration with the Department of Theatre and the Honors College will present preview performances at 7:30 p.m. today (April 9) and Wednesday (April 10) in Pao Hall, Mallett Theatre. A Bug Bowl performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday (April 13) in Stewart Center, Fowler Hall.
The play was originally published in 1921 in Czechoslovakia and incorporates elements of fable, revue and satire, ensuring its appeal to a general audience and making it appropriate for all ages.
All but two of the characters in the play are insects that display human qualities and foibles. Although originally written by the Brothers Capek as a reflection on human society in the post-World War I era, the topics addressed in the play continue to resonate with audiences today.
Admission is free, but tickets are required to attend. Tickets will be available in the Department of Entomology’s main office in Smith Hall, Room 100. For more information, call 49-44554.
