Workshop series to focus on religious literacy

February 4, 2013

The Diversity Resource Office and DiversiKey Certificate Program will present a special workshop series aimed at increasing religious literacy on campus. The series is geared toward students, but all are welcome to attend.

The series, titled "Religious Literacy in a Global Community," is being offered as preparation for Intersections -- A Student Conference on Diversity, which will focus on religious diversity.

Workshop participants will be introduced to the basic history, structure, beliefs and practices of several of the world’s religions. A group discussion will focus on the need for religious literacy, and participants will draft individualized action plans for developing religious literacy as an ongoing practice of inclusive leadership.

The five sessions will be held 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesdays starting Feb. 5 in the Electrical Engineering Building, Room 222. The session titles and dates are:

* Tuesday (Feb. 5) -- "Rivers of Faith: Hinduism, Jainism, & Buddhism"

* Feb. 12 -- "Children of Abraham: Judaism, Christianity, & Islam"

* Feb. 19 – "Remembering Earth and Sky: Indigenous and NeoPagan Religions"

* Feb. 26 – "Defying Description: Bahá’í, Sikhism & Unitarianism"

* March 5 – "The Practice of Irreligion: Atheism, Agnosticism & Skepticism"

A flier for the series is available here.
