College of Agriculture holding fourth annual food drive

March 26, 2013

The fourth annual Purdue College of Agriculture Food Drive is accepting donations through April 12.

More than 15 departments and offices in the college are competing to "out-donate" each other by collecting food and monetary donations to support Food Finders Food Bank, which is based in Lafayette and serves 16 Indiana counties.

This year's goal is 40,000 pounds of food. Last year, the drive collected 38,851 pounds.

Donations not only will help stock area food pantries but also will support the BackPack Program, which distributes more than 3,500 food-filled backpacks to schoolchildren each Friday, often providing the only food that a family might have for the weekend.

Anyone can contribute to the drive by dropping off canned goods or monetary donations at a College of Agriculture departmental office. There will be scheduled pickups in each departmental area on April 5 and April 12.

A traveling trophy, a wooden pitchfork with the winning department's name engraved on the handle, will be awarded at the inaugural Blue Jean Ball, a fundraiser for Food Finders, on May 18 at Beck Agricultural Center.
