Purdue United Way Campaign to kick off Tuesday
September 5, 2012
The 2012 Purdue United Way Campaign aims to raise $745,000 for Greater Lafayette agencies beginning with its kickoff Tuesday (Sept. 11).
The campaign, which runs through Nov. 15, will kick off at 8 a.m. Tuesday at Purdue Memorial Union's North Ballroom. By making donations and participating in organized activities throughout the campaign, Purdue employees can show their support for the local community.
"Local families, individuals, the elderly, and children benefit greatly from your gift," says Maryann Santos de Barona, 2012 Purdue United Way chair and dean of the College of Education. "Funding for the United Way helps to develop solutions for poverty and tackle homelessness, as well as support groundbreaking reading programs in local schools."
"Building Extraordinary Futures" is the theme for this year's Purdue campaign. Purdue's goal of $745,000 is a significant percentage of the community's goal of $4.75 million.
Pledge cards will be delivered to the team captains of each department during the week of Sept. 11, and campus employees will receive them soon after. The pledge cards should be returned to the team captains or sent directly to Dauch Alumni Center in the envelope included. All donations will go to the 23 participating organizations that serve the communities of Lafayette and West Lafayette and many of the surrounding counties. Faculty and staff can designate their gifts to other counties or a particular United Way agency or agencies.
This year, there is also a dollar-for-dollar match for those who increase their vanguard donation. This match is provided by a grant from the Lilly Foundation and provides funding for United Way incentives. In addition, a new "Step Up" vanguard initiative allows a donor to give $500 this year, pledging to increase to $1,000 by 2014.
These Step Up donors and vanguard donors are also recognized in the Vanguard Directory and are eligible for discounted Buchanan Club suite tickets for the Boiler vs. Marshall football game on Sept 29. Also, a donor who gives just $20 more than last year is eligible for a half-price ticket to the Marshall game. Additional details are on the pledge card and brochure.
United Way of Greater Lafayette has channeled over $110 million into the community since 1923. Today, its 23 local agencies include the American Red Cross, Food Finders Food Bank, Lafayette Family YMCA and Riggs Community Health Center.
