Mobile app puts power of Castlight in patient's hands

In July, Purdue launched the latest in health care technology for employees and their families -- Castlight Health. Castlight lets those covered by a Purdue medical plan shop for medical services by cost and quality and simultaneously keeps track of their medical spending.
Now the Castlight smartphone mobile app lets users easily find the health care information they need anytime, anywhere. Becky Gutwein, medical benefits manager in Human Resources, recommends that medical plan participants install the mobile app and take it with them to the doctor's office.
"If your doctor refers you to a specialist or orders a screening test, you'll know where to go for high quality and affordable care," Gutwein says. "When your doctor recommends labs, specialists and other medical services, look them up on the spot to learn about the cost and quality of your options."
Castlight uses actual Purdue claims data to show how much medical providers are charging for services. In addition, users can find information about where individual doctors went to medical school, how long they have been practicing, and how other patients have rated them.
The mobile app also provides an electronic version of the user's medical plan ID card.
