The Purdue Alumni Association has named Bharat Bhargava (MS electrical and computer engineering ’71, PhD electrical and computer engineering ’74) and Ron Lemenager as recipients of the 2026 Special Boilermaker Award for their dedication to Purdue.

Established in 1981, the award honors members of the Purdue faculty or staff who have contributed significantly to the improvement of the quality of life and/or the betterment of the educational experience for a substantial number of Purdue students.

Ryan Kay, chair of the Purdue Alumni Association, presented the awardees with pewter locomotive sculptures on the field at Ross-Ade Stadium during Purdue’s home game against Washington on Oct. 16.

Bhargava has been a professor of computer science for 42 years. According to his nominators, “Bhargava remains deeply motivated and actively involved in teaching and research. He continues to mentor new students and organize events that foster a collaborative and inclusive environment for everyone on his team.”

For 49 years, Lemenager has served as a professor of animal science. His nominators wrote, “Ron is the definition of a silent leader. He does not seek attention or accolades, yet his influence is everywhere. Generations of students know him as ‘Dr. Ron,’ a reflection of his approachability and the trust he builds. He leads through example by listening, offering steady guidance and showing up consistently.”

The Purdue Alumni Association accepts nominations from June 1 to July 1. Nominations may be made by any person or group affiliated with Purdue — students, faculty, staff or alumni. The names of recipients are inscribed on the recognition obelisk on Purdue Mall and on a plaque in the Dick and Sandy Dauch Alumni Center.
