Take action: Important deadline information for HSA Bank account holders

Employees with funding accounts — health savings accounts (HSAs), health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs) or flexible spending accounts (FSAs) — may need to take action regarding their 2026 accounts.

HSA participants should review 2026 contributions to ensure they remain within the IRS annual limits, while FSA and HRA participants should check remaining balances and plan to use available funds by Dec. 31. FSA and HRA funds will not roll over into 2027.

Update 2026 HSA contributions by Nov. 13

The deadline to make changes to HSAs is Nov. 13. Employees should review their HSA contributions and university contributions — including incentive pay from the Your Path Wellness Program — and make any adjustments via Benefitfocus. Doing so by the deadline ensures that changes are processed in time for the end of the calendar year so employees do not exceed 2026 IRS annual contribution limits.

If an employee’s spouse also receives or makes contributions to an HSA through Purdue or another employer, both must collectively adhere to the family contribution limit.

As a reminder, the 2026 limits for total combined HSA contributions are:

  • $4,400 for employee-only coverage
  • $8,750 for family coverage (employee + one or more)

Note: Federal rules also allow what are called “catch-up” contributions to an HSA. Individuals who are age 55 or older, or will turn 55 anytime during the plan year, may contribute an additional $1,000 above the IRS limits.

HSA funds roll over from year to year, so there is no requirement to spend the account balance by Dec. 31. The year-end review is intended to help employees ensure contributions remain within annual IRS limits.

Next step: Review 2026 HSA contributions and make any needed changes in Benefitfocus by Nov. 13.

FSA participants: Use funds by Dec. 31

Unlike HSA funds, unused funds in FSAs do not roll over into the next year.

Employees with money remaining in a healthcare, limited-purpose or dependent care FSA should review their balance and plan for eligible expenses incurred by Dec. 31, 2026. Remaining funds will be forfeited after applicable claim-submission deadlines.

Next step: Check current FSA balances and use available funds for eligible 2026 expenses before the end of the year.

HRA reminder

As a reminder, reimbursement from an HRA can be made only for eligible claims incurred in 2026. Eligible claims include qualifying medical expenses, over-the-counter prescriptions, and vision and dental expenses. Unused funds remaining in the account after the runout period (90 days following the end of the plan year or termination date) will be forfeited.

HSA Bank cards

New cards will not be sent from HSA Bank unless the date on an individual’s current card has expired.
