PUPD offers new class: Basic Armed Suspect Evasion and Defense (BASED)

The Purdue University Police Department has created a new self-defense course. Basic Armed Suspect Evasion and Defense (BASED) is a supplemental course that will be available to anyone who has attended Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE). BASED is a low-impact, introductory level, basic self-defense class. Attendees will learn tactics to defend themselves during a potential active threat from a suspect armed with a long gun, pistol or knife. This class will be appropriate for anyone age 18 or older, of any physical ability.

The PUPD has been offering CRASE classes since 2019. CRASE provides strategies, guidance and plan options for surviving an active threat event. Training topics include the history and prevalence of active shooter events, civilian response options and preparation of a response in advance. At Purdue, “Run! Hide! Fight!” is the recommended response to an active threat situation. The PUPD currently has five CRASE instructors: Detective Geoff Carlson, Lt. Sarah Clark, Lt. Nick Crosby, Sgt. A.J. Demello and Sgt. Jon Selke. While running or hiding should be the first response options whenever feasible, they may not be an option for some people and/or in certain circumstances. As a last resort, if someone should have to fight off an attacker, the CRASE team wants to ensure that Purdue faculty, staff and students have the opportunity to learn basic defensive tactics.

The first BASED classes will be held at the PUPD on the following dates:

  • Nov. 17: 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 2:30-4:30 p.m.
  • Nov. 19: 8:30-10:30 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m.

These are duplicate sessions, so please only register for one.

If you would like to attend BASED but have not yet attended CRASE, you may register for one of the following CRASE sessions:

  • Nov. 4: 9:30-11:30 a.m. in Rawls 2079
  • Nov. 12: 1:30-3:30 p.m. in Schleman 303

To register, please contact Lt. Sarah Clark at sclark32@purdue.edu and indicate your preferred sessions.
