Senate 60th anniversary and faculty years of service celebrated at recent luncheon

Purdue University honored a significant University Senate milestone and recognized more than 300 faculty members for their years of service during a celebratory luncheon Dec. 3.

Faculty members were celebrated for service anniversaries ranging from 10 years to a remarkable 55. Robert Spitzer, associate professor of materials engineering, and Robert Jacko, professor of civil engineering, were the longest-serving faculty to be honored; both reached their 55-year service anniversaries in 2024.

The luncheon also commemorated the 60th anniversary of the University Senate. The senate serves in an advisory capacity to help achieve the educational objectives of the university. It features elected members of the Purdue faculty as well as the presidents of Purdue Student Government and Purdue Graduate Student Government.

“For me, the 60th anniversary of the senate is not just a celebration of the passage of time but of the shared cooperation toward educational excellence that has survived through six very tumultuous decades, not just in higher education but in our country,” said Susan South, current senate chair and professor of clinical psychology. “The senate has served as a touchstone for faculty to always come back to the core debate of how to accomplish the mission of this land-grant education — teaching, research and engagement.”

Brian Leung, professor of English, served as senate chair from 2023-24. “Being a part of the Purdue University Senate and learning about its history gave me the ability to discover the needs of individuals across our campus community as well as how the senate apparatus can effect positive change,” said Leung. “Humbly, I’m just a novelist, a professor in the Department of English, but the University Senate gave me a chance to serve and make consequential contributions to Purdue life.”
