Save the date: Purdue celebrates International Book Publishers Day with webinar series launch

As part of the recently launched Purdue University Books Initiative, the provost’s office will kick off a monthly webinar series at 3 p.m. Jan. 16 in honor of International Book Publishers Day. The guest for the inaugural online seminar is Joe Hayton, publishing director for Elsevier science and technology books. The link for participation via Teams will be available on the Purdue Books Initiative website.

The monthly webinar series aims to lower barriers for new and prospective authors to connect with reputable publishing houses and bring their project from idea to ISBN in record time. The webinars will provide learning opportunities for all Purdue authors through presentations and tips from editors involved in proposal screening, book projects acquisition, peer review, production, printing and advertising. Ample Q&A time will give all participants the opportunity to learn the process and intricacies of publishing a book efficiently.

Hayton is the publishing director for physical sciences in the reference division at Elsevier. He leads a team of 25 editors and publishers responsible for the acquisition and development of print and electronic book-length content. He has 40 years of experience in publishing including positions in sales, marketing and content acquisitions that provide him with deep insights into end-user needs.

Elsevier is a global leader in information and analytics, helping researchers and professionals advance science and improve outcomes for the benefit of society.

Beyond expanding connections with publishing houses, additional activities under the Purdue Books Initiative will involve managing the author incentive, providing support services to Purdue authors, and increasing the recognition of authors and scholarly work published as books.

To learn more about this initiative, authors can visit the Purdue Books Initiative website or contact Cristina Farmus, vice president for special projects.
