Purdue Travels provides tips to enhance travel experience when flying out of Purdue University Airport

As more faculty and staff navigate booking and flying with Southern Airways out of the Purdue Airport, Purdue Travel has compiled guidance to enhance the experience whether traveling for university business or personal purposes.

Purdue Travel recommends faculty and staff traveling on official university business book flights out of the Purdue University Airport (LAF) to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). For domestic travel, travelers should book through the university’s travel agent, AAA Corporate Travel, or directly with Southern Airways or one of its airline partners — United Airlines, American Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines or Alaska Airlines. For international travel, Purdue Travel recommends booking through the university’s travel agent, AAA Corporate Travel, or with one of the airline partners — United Airlines, American Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines or Alaska Airlines. Those traveling for personal reasons may book directly with Southern Airways or one of its partners.

By booking through these methods, travelers will benefit from many conveniences — automatic transfer of luggage to the next leg of the trip, bypass of O’Hare’s security lines and screenings, and a short walk from terminal to terminal. Additionally, if a flight is delayed, canceled or missed due to connection issues, the airline will ensure you reach your next destination at no additional cost.

If passengers purchased Southern Airways tickets separately or their itinerary includes a connecting flight with airlines other than United, American, Hawaiian or Alaska, luggage will not be automatically transferred. Upon arrival at O’Hare, passengers must retrieve their checked bags from baggage claim, recheck luggage for the next flight and go back through security. It is recommended to schedule a layover of at least two hours to facilitate this process. If passengers miss a flight, they should contact the airline in which the flight was missed.

Please visit the Purdue University Airport website for additional information, including frequently asked questions and a quick reference guide on the travel process. An airport map is also available on the O’Hare International Airport website. Question may be directed to Purdue Travel at purduetravel@purdue.edu.
