Purdue to be featured this weekend as part of C-SPAN’s 2014 Cities Tour

Purdue’s place in aviation and space history will be among topics explored in segments to be aired Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 20-21) as part of C-SPAN’s 2014 Cities Tour.
The C-SPAN tour, which is traveling to selected cities to feature the history and literary life of each area, stopped in Lafayette and West Lafayette in November. C-SPAN crews interviewed local historians, authors and civic leaders for segments that will air on C-SPAN2 and C-SPAN3 (Channel 446 and Channel 447 on Comcast).
The segments will be sprinkled in throughout the weekend on the respective networks, and the segments will be shown in programming blocks at noon Saturday on Book TV on C-SPAN2 and at 2 p.m. Sunday on American History TV on C-SPAN3. The segments also will be available after broadcast on the C-SPAN Cities Tour website.
Purdue-related topics that will air during the Book TV programming block are:
* John Norberg, Purdue retiree and writer of "Spacewalker: My Journey in Space and Faith as NASA's Record-Setting Frequent Flyer” with Purdue graduate Jerry Ross, on the University’s aviation and space history.
* Angie Klink, Purdue alumna and local author, on her book “The Deans’ Bible: Five Purdue Women and Their Quest for Equality,” which highlights the contributions of Purdue women deans Dorothy Stratton, Helen Schleman, Beverley Stone, Barbara Cook, and Betty Nelson.
* Robert May, professor of American history, on his book "Slavery, Race and Conquest in the Tropics," which focuses on what Abraham Lincoln did to stop slavery's growth southward, while Stephen Douglas, the U.S. senator from Illinois, wanted the United States to own much or all of Latin America even if slavery went along with it.
* Glenn Sparks, professor of communication, on "Refrigerator Rights," a book about the challenges of forging close relationships in the age of new media. Sparks co-wrote the book with Will Miller.
* Stephanie Schmitz, Purdue Libraries psychoactive substances archivist, on Purdue’s Psychoactive Substances Research Collection.
Purdue segments that will air on American History TV are:
* Sammie Morris, associate professor and university archivist, and head of archives and special collections, on Purdue’s George Palmer Putnam Collection of Amelia Earhart Papers, which is the world’s largest compilation of artifacts on the late aviator.
* Tracy Grimm, Purdue’s Barron Hilton Flight and Space Exploration archivist, on the exhibit “Steps to the Moon: Selections from the Neil A. Armstrong Papers and the Eugene A. Cernan Papers,” which is currently on display in the Virginia Kelly Karnes Archives and Special Collections Research Center on the fourth floor of the Humanities, Social Science and Education Library in Stewart Center.
* Robert Browning, director of the C-SPAN Archives and an associate professor of communication and political science, on the C-SPAN Archives. The archives, located at Purdue Research Park, index all C-SPAN programming from its three networks, and the content such as speeches and debates is available online. There are 40,000 online views daily.
The segments also will focus on Von's Book Shop, Lafayette Railroad Relocation, the site of the Battle of Tippecanoe and the importance of the railroad and canal industries in the growth of Lafayette.
