Motivated by their dreams. Empowered by a Purdue education. Ready to make a difference. Meet our 5 Students Who Move the World Forward.
The students featured are:
* Christy Kettler, a freshman in agricultural economics from Westfield, Ind. Through her coursework and community activities, Kettler hopes to gain knowledge and experience to address the issue of global food insecurity. She's already got a great head start -- thanks to her work with FFA and 4-H.
* Rachit Agarwal, a senior in actuarial sciences and applied statistics from Kolkata, India. Due to graduate in May, Agarwal is making his time count by helping to ensure his fellow students' success while having fun in the process. Rachit practices his passion for helping his peers succeed as a Supplemental Instruction leader and a Purdue Promise math tutor.
* Jason Hawes, freshman in first-year engineering from Galveston, Texas. An Eagle Scout and Beering Scholar, Hawes brings a sash full of recognition and achievements to Purdue -- student council president, Special Olympics coach, editor of the school newspaper, Academic Super Bowl captain and FIRST Robotics team leader, to name just a few.
* Heather Moore, a doctoral candidate in American studies from Buffalo, N.Y. To meet her goal of helping black young men through education, leadership and mentorship, Moore started the Black E.L.M. Project at Jefferson High School in Lafayette in 2011. Moore meets with the students weekly at the Black Cultural Center and discusses issues and materials that are not typically a part of their formal high school education.
* Nathaly Samper, a senior in mechanical engineering, from Naperville, Ill. Samper hopes to use her background in mechanical engineering to inspire a younger generation of diverse women to explore engineering.
