Sloan Indigenous Graduate Partnership (SIGP)
Mission statement: The Sloan Indigenous Graduate Partnership (SIGP) program seeks to transform graduate STEM education in ways that support: 1) the inclusion of Indigenous perspectives, knowledge, values and experiences in STEM research, teaching, and engagement, 2) the ability of graduate students to address issues relevant to Indigenous communities, 3) a sense of belonging for and contribution to a community of SIGP scholars, and 4) expand and strengthen pathways and programs that encourage Indigenous students to apply to STEM graduate programs at Purdue University. SIGP partner institutions include the University of Arizona, the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, the University of Kansas and Haskell Indian Nations University, Montana State University, the University of Montana, the University of North Carolina Asheville, Western Carolina University, and Purdue University. Program Benefits: The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation provides scholarships that are a supplement to assistantships or fellowships a Sloan Scholar receives from their program. M.S. scholarships are $22,000 awarded over two years and PhD scholarships are $44,000 awarded over four years. Additionally, Sloan Scholars join a community of Indigenous scholars on the Purdue campus and as part of the national SIGP program. Sloan Scholars also have access to mentoring outside their research program, opportunities for professional development and, as alumni, to join the Sloan Scholars Mentoring Network.
Application criteria: Applications will be reviewed for all students who have been accepted into a residential STEM graduate program at Purdue University (West Lafayette campus only) and who are a U.S. citizen, Lawful Permanent Resident, Refugee, or Asylee. Canadian-born Native Americans who meet specific criteria under the Jay Treaty of 1794 are also eligible. The SIGP program is open to all regardless of race or ethnicity.
