Sponsored Student Class Projects and Capstone Projects

*If you have submitted an intake form as requested below and have not heard from our office within 1 week, please contact us at legalcounsel@purdue.edu.

If you desire to conduct a class project or capstone project that is sponsored by an outside sponsor, please complete the following steps in order to ensure the most efficient processing of your request.

  1. Fill out the Student Class Project spreadsheet.  Please be sure to fill in all columns, as leaving blank columns may result in the form being returned to you for completion.  Spreadsheets should be emailed to legalcounsel@purdue.edu
  2. Our office will send a Sponsor Acknowledgment Form to the Sponsor (with a copy to the Instructor), and an Instructor Acknowledgment to the Instructor.  The Sponsor and the Instructor will receive an email from DocuSign that will navigate you through the completion of the forms.
  3. DocuSign will notify our office when the forms have been completed, and our office will review to determine if additional steps are necessary due to export control requirements or other information included on the form.  Our office will stamp the approval block when the project has been approved, and DocuSign will notify the Instructor and the Sponsor of approval.
  4. If you are notified that a project involves pre-existing Purdue-owned Intellectual Property, the students participating on the project team will need to fill out the form linked here before the project an be approved:DocuSign Powerform

General Notes:

  • We recommend allowing at least one month for processing.  While our office is usually able to process on our end in a much shorter amount of time, our processing does not begin until we receive the completed Sponsor Acknowledgment Form from the Sponsor.
  • Sponsors that request Non-Disclosure Agreements must agree to follow the best practices for submitting Non-Disclosure Agreements to our students.  Instructors will be responsible for managing the student signature process and ensuring that sponsor requirements with respect to Non-Disclosure Agreements are met.  Instructors will also be responsible for reporting to our office if Sponsors are not adhering to the best practices agreed to in the Sponsor Acknowledgment Form regarding Non-Disclosure Agreements.
  • If you believe your project has special circumstances or a sponsor has special requests, please notify our office by email at legalcounsel@purdue.edu.

If you have any questions regarding this process, please contact us at legalcounsel@purdue.edu.
