Eligibility Policies

Deadlines

There are two application deadlines for Purdue Study Abroad: 1 March for summer, fall and academic year programs; 15 September for spring semester programs.  There are, however, some programs with earlier deadlines. When possible, the study abroad advisor will inform each student about these deadlines as part of the advising process, but it is still the responsibility of the student to be aware of the program's deadline.

It is expected that applicants submit complete applications by the stated application deadline. Under special circumstances students may request permission to submit a late application.

General Eligibility

Pre-requisites required by the program sponsors are listed on the webpage for each study abroad program. Besides the GPA, these requirements can range from major field, year in college, to certain courses completed. The study abroad advisor will know if any of these eligibility requirements can be waived or not.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

The required GPA listed on the webpage for each study abroad program indicates the eligibility requirement of the program sponsor. The GPA requirement varies by program. Certain programs are rigid in their adherence to the GPA requirement while other programs either have an appeal process or are willing to consider applicants whose GPA approximately meets the requirement. The study abroad advisor for each program will have more information about this.

Transfer and Re-admitted Students and Study Abroad

Students who transfer to Purdue University must complete at least one semester of academic work at Purdue before they can apply to study abroad. They cannot apply to study abroad during the first semester of attendance at Purdue University.

Students who have been dropped from Purdue University for academic reasons or who sit out for one or more semesters and then return to Purdue, must complete at least one full-time semester back at Purdue before they can apply to study abroad.

Probation, Academic

Students on academic probation are not eligible to apply for study abroad. After being accepted for study abroad, students must maintain good academic standing. The Office of Programs for Study Abroad reserves the right to revoke study abroad approval if a student is placed on academic probation after being approved but before the start of the study abroad program. Students in this situation will be responsible for any non-refundable or non-recoverable fees owed to the study abroad program.

Probation, Disciplinary

The Office of Programs for Study Abroad reviews the disciplinary records of all study abroad applicants. Students with problematic disciplinary histories might not be approved to study overseas.

Students placed on disciplinary probation after being approved to study abroad will have the approval revoked. Students in this situation will be responsible for any non-refundable or non-recoverable fees owed to the study abroad program.

Students on disciplinary probation who want to apply for a study abroad program that will take place after their probation ends can do so. However, they are to be advised that their applications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis in consultation with the Purdue Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities. If the application is approved, the host institution or program provider will be notified of the student’s disciplinary status. In some cases, additional restrictions may be placed on the student’s participation in the program, at the discretion of the host institution, program provider, or Purdue University.

Study Abroad After Graduation

Students who have graduated from Purdue may study abroad the term immediately following their graduation.  Students will need to complete a re-entry application to be enrolled at Purdue during the term they are studying abroad and required to complete all coursework for the program. All credits and grades earned abroad will be reflected on the student’s transcript as post-baccalaureate. Note that graduated students who study abroad may not be eligible for financial aid and should check with the Division of Financial Aid. However, graduated students are still eligible to apply for the Purdue Moves Scholarship.

Independent Study Abroad

Students who desire to participate in an unapproved study abroad program must do so independently of Purdue University. Therefore, students may not study abroad independently with any of Purdue’s existing partners (i.e., university, third party program providers, etc.). Purdue Study Abroad will not advise or support students studying abroad independently nor sign forms or documents for unapproved programs. Furthermore, financial aid and scholarships do not apply towards independent study abroad programs.
