Hey everyone. It’s hot again! I’ve been really trying to savor these last weeks of warmth before we descend into another gray Indiana winter. While I am looking forward to being able to bring some green back into my apartment once I’m forced to save my houseplants from freezing to death, I will definitely miss the heat.

Not much has happened on the farm as of last week. We’ve been harvesting lots of delicata squash- a small, sweet, winter squash variety- and just picked our first harvest of table grapes from the vines at the student farm. They’ve been growing under the high tunnel for three years now, and this is the first year we’ve seen a significant amount of fruit. I can honestly attest to their flavor as I’ve been sneaking a grape here and there since the beginning of August. They’re sweet and tart and currently my favorite snack. My second favorite has got to be the sweet habaneros that will make an appearance in your bags tomorrow. They lack capsaicin, the oil that makes hot peppers so spicy, but still invoke the flavor of a hot pepper. The first few times I tried them, I involuntarily braced myself as the flavor hit my tongue but was surprised by the absence of pain.

Onion has also still been making his diurnal appearances around the farm. Sophia found out he is a boy the other day, and I’ve heard he’s a polite little guy. Though, I still haven’t met him yet. I’m hoping to catch him on his morning rounds tomorrow.
