The Transformative Journey of Matthew Haan’s Summer Internship in the Philippines

“Studying abroad and doing an internship was the best decision I ever made!” This summer Matthew Haan (Senior/Horticulture Production and Marketing) is interning at the International Rice Research Institute in Los Baños, Philippines, researching rice genetics and submergence.

The most rewarding part of his experience is conversing with individuals from diverse backgrounds, learning from the local farmers and in the laboratory. Matthew faces transportation challenges in the Philippines due to its mountainous terrain and numerous islands. “There’s no public transportation, but there are Jeepneys!”

His advice to fellow students? “Being immersed into another culture allows for unparalleled personal and professional growth. Take a risk, take a leap, embrace challenges!”

More photos of his experience can be found on our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
