Langenhoven Shares Student Farm Model with Ohio State

Petrus Langenhoven, clinical assistant professor and Director of the Purdue Student Farm, visited The Ohio State University’s Department of Horticulture and Crop Science (HCS) on October 7–8. There he gave a departmental seminar titled “Growing More Than Vegetables: What a Student Farm Contributes to the Land-Grant Mission.” The talk used the Purdue Student Farm as a case study for how a working campus farm advances teaching, research, and Extension together. On the Columbus campus, Langenhoven toured the Controlled Environment Agriculture Research Complex (CEARC) and the student farm at Waterman Farm. He also met with the OSU Student Farm team to exchange ideas on operations and student programming. He then traveled to the Wooster area to tour Tilmor’s Dalton, Ohio, factory. Tilmor builds equipment for small-scale and specialty crop growers and is known for its cultivating tractors, including the all-electric Super E, and for mechanical weeding tools that reduce reliance on herbicides and hand labor. He also visited the OSU Horticulture Unit 1 research campus in Wooster. The visit opened conversations about collaboration between the two land-grant institutions on student farms, controlled environment agriculture, and specialty crop production.
