Assistant Professor Yiwei Huang led an independent study last fall and gathered five landscape architecture students to work on a children’s book that introduces Indiana native plants for K-12 populations. The final product, an illustrated children’s book, accompanying board game, school syllabus, and interactive activities, won a National Honor Award (Communication Category) from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). The team’s entry can be reviewed here: https://www.asla.org/2023studentawards/8931.html. The design team consists of Autumn McNinch (BSLA 2023), Chloe Kennedy (BSLA 2023), Kayla Kramer (BSLA 2023), Molly Wimberg (BSLA 2023), and Wanting Zhang (MS, 2024). The project received generous feedback and support from three additional HLA faculty and staff members, Karen Mitchell, Kathryn Orvis, and Sean Rotar.

The annual national ASLA student winners showcase innovation and represent the highest level of achievement among the future of the profession. This year, 30 winners were chosen out of 372 entries. Award recipients will be honored in person at the awards presentation ceremony during the ASLA 2023 Conference on Landscape Architecture in Minneapolis, MN., October 27-30.
