Exploring Agricultural Innovation with HLA Alumnus at 80 Acres Farms

On July 10, 2025, HLA members Petrus Langenhoven (Vegetable Extension Specialist), Barrett Wilson (Hydroponic Research Operations Administrator), and Nathan Shoaf (Urban Agriculture Assistant Program Leader, Purdue Extension) had the unique opportunity to explore the cutting-edge world of vertical farming at 80 Acres Farms in Florence, Kentucky. Their guide? None other than 2019 HLA alumnus Alex Miller, who has grown his career alongside the crops he now oversees as the company’s subject matter expert for leafy crops.

From HLA to Industry Leader

Alex Miller’s journey from HLA graduate to agricultural innovation specialist exemplifies the diverse career paths available in modern agriculture. At 80 Acres Farms, Alex applies his expertise to optimize the production of leafy greens using revolutionary farming techniques that challenge everything we thought we knew about traditional agriculture.

A Learning Experience

The visit provided invaluable insights into how technology and innovation are reshaping agriculture. From climate-controlled growing environments to precision nutrient delivery systems, 80 Acres Farms demonstrates how modern farming can be both environmentally responsible and economically viable.

Alex Miller’s expertise in leafy crop production gave the group a behind-the-scenes look at the science and art of vertical farming. His success story serves as an inspiration to current and future HLA members, showing how agricultural leadership can take many forms in today’s evolving industry.
