Walters wins Exceptional Early Career Award

Becky Walters received Purdue’s 2018 Exceptional Early Career Award for her effective instruction, course innovation and student mentorship. The award is a part of the University’s efforts to recognize outstanding undergraduate professors. Walters, a clinical associate professor of nursing, was nominated to represent the College of Health and Human Sciences.
Walters specializes in adult health and management of clients with complex health care issues, and she has been designing and implementing related simulations in the Nursing curriculum.
She teaches didactic, clinical and simulation-based courses and is a practicing nurse practitioner in primary care at IU Health Arnett. There, she has led numerous student projects focusing on quality improvement.
Walters’ research interests include quality improvement in the acute care setting, experiential learning, clinical simulation and integrating Lean principles in nursing education. Last year, she co-authored “Simulations in the Classroom: An Innovative Active Learning Experience.”
For seven years Walters worked as a registered nurse in inpatient medical and surgical units and managed the International Travel Vaccination Center and the Infectious Diseases and Wound Care departments at IU Health Arnett. She began her teaching career at Purdue in 2011.
Walters also has received the 2017 College of Health and Human Sciences Jane S. Link Outstanding Teacher Award, the 2017-18 University’s Teaching for Tomorrow Junior Fellowship Award, the 2018 School of Nursing Outstanding Teaching Award and the 2017 Sigma Theta Tau Excellence of Nursing Practice Award.
