West Lafayette, Ind. – Purdue University’s White Lodging–J.W. Marriott, Jr. School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) is proud to announce a remarkable rise in the newly released ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2025. This year, Purdue HTM advanced from No. 21 to No. 7 globally and now sits at No. 3 among all U.S. programs – an extraordinary testament to the School’s growing global impact and academic excellence.

A Globally Recognized Benchmark of Excellence

ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s GRAS is widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive and objective evaluations of academic disciplines worldwide. The 2025 edition assesses 57 subjects across Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences – fields that collectively shape the future of research, innovation, and practice. Two newly added subject areas, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Science & Engineering, reflect the ranking’s continuous evolution alongside emerging global priorities.

This year, approximately 2,000 universities from 92 countries and regions were reviewed, with GRAS analyzing roughly 20,000 subject-specific units. The rigor of this assessment and the breadth of the competition underscore the significance of Purdue HTM’s impressive ascent.

GRAS rankings are determined using nine research-driven indicators organized into five categories:

  • World-Class Faculty
  • World-Class Research Output
  • High-Quality Research
  • Research Impact
  • International Collaboration

These indicators measure not only productivity but also the influence and reach of academic work across borders and industries.

A Testament to Research Strength and Student-Centered Excellence

Purdue HTM’s rise reflects years of strategic investment in impactful scholarship, innovative pedagogy, and deeply engaged partnerships with industry. Faculty across the School continue to produce influential research that shapes global hospitality and tourism practices, while students benefit from hands-on learning and a culture committed to preparing future-ready leaders.

This momentum, coupled with the School’s collaborative spirit, has positioned Purdue HTM as a global leader in hospitality and tourism education.

Leadership Perspective

Ceridwyn King, White Lodging Services Head and Professor of Hospitality and Tourism Management, and Associate Dean of Indianapolis and Strategic Initiatives for Purdue’s College of Health and Human Sciences, emphasized the collective effort behind this achievement.

“This ranking reflects the extraordinary dedication, curiosity, and innovation of our entire community – faculty, staff, and students. Our focus has always been on creating meaningful impact, whether through leading-edge research, exceptional student experiences, or collaboration with world-class industry partners. To see Purdue HTM recognized among the top programs in the world is both deeply rewarding and energizing. It reinforces our commitment to shaping the future of hospitality and tourism, one step at a time.”
