Amanda Cecil begins as a new clinical professor and assistant head of strategic initiatives and educational partnerships with Purdue HTM on January 1, 2026.

West Lafayette, Ind. – Purdue University’s White Lodging–J.W. Marriott, Jr. School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) has appointed Amanda Cecil as a clinical professor and the school’s new associate head of strategic initiatives and educational partnerships, based in Indianapolis. Cecil brings more two decades of academic leadership, industry experience, and global engagement to one of the world’s top hospitality programs.

“Purdue’s HTM program is already widely recognized by both the academic community and the hospitality industry as a leading global program,” Cecil shared. “It is exciting to see this distinguished academic unit expanding into Indianapolis in fall 2026.”

Her appointment comes at a critical moment for both Purdue and the city of Indianapolis, which is experiencing unprecedented momentum in tourism, hospitality, and events. In her new role, Cecil will lead Purdue HTM’s strategic expansion into Purdue’s Indianapolis location, focusing on academic innovation, deepened industry partnerships, and a robust research agenda designed to meet the workforce needs of one of the fastest-growing hospitality markets in the country.

A Vision for HTM in Indianapolis

Cecil describes her vision as focused on strengthening the program’s solid foundation while embracing the opportunities inherent in an urban campus environment.

“My vision for expanding the HTM program at Purdue in Indianapolis is clear and focused: to strengthen its solid foundation by incorporating innovative practices, elevating standards of excellence, and leveraging the unique opportunities offered by an urban campus setting,” she said.

Why Indianapolis—and Why Now

Cecil’s appointment aligns with a historic surge in tourism and hospitality activity in Indianapolis. The city welcomed 32 million visitors in 2024, generating nearly $6 billion in economic impact. Events such as Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, the National Eucharistic Congress, NBA All-Star Weekend, and the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials contributed to nine of the 10 highest hotel occupancy days in the city’s history.

Significant hotel development is also underway. New properties such as Signia by Hilton, Tempo by Hilton, Shinola Hotel, and Kimpton Hotel are slated to open between 2026 and 2028, alongside expansions in restaurants, retail, and visitor attractions.

“With this rapid tourism momentum comes an urgent need to invest in hospitality workforce development,” Cecil explained. “Purdue HTM is uniquely positioned to meet this demand through strategic partnerships, innovative programming, and clear career pathways.”

“Amanda brings an extraordinary combination of academic rigor, industry intelligence, and a genuine commitment to student success,” said Ceridwyn King, White Lodging Services Head and Professor of Hospitality and Tourism Management, and Associate Dean of Indianapolis and Strategic Initiatives for Purdue’s College of Health and Human Sciences. “Her vision for Indianapolis aligns powerfully with Purdue HTM’s mission, and her leadership will be instrumental as we expand our presence in a city experiencing historic hospitality growth.”

A Transformative Step Forward

As Purdue HTM strengthens its position as a leading global hospitality program and extends its reach into one of the nation’s most dynamic tourism markets, Dr. Amanda Cecil’s leadership marks an exciting next chapter.

“I am honored to join Purdue HTM at such a pivotal time,” Cecil said. “Together with our students, faculty, industry partners, and community leaders, we will shape the future of hospitality and tourism in Indianapolis.”Purdue HTM remains focused on pushing boundaries, elevating research, and preparing the next generation of leaders in hospitality, tourism, and beyond.
