The Nexus CRISPR on Crops project’s member Jorge Condori led a workshop for their UNSA colleagues on the main molecular biology techniques from October 7th to 11th at the Universidad de San Agustin de Arequipa (UNSA) in Peru. The workshop was focused on improving the UNSA faculty members’ technical skills on molecular biology and introduce a new model organism for research along with online tools to enhance their research
The UNSA faculty who participated in the workshop were: Rosario Valderrama, Herbert Lazo, Herbert Delgado, Roxana Bardales, Mayela Mayta, Sandro Condori; as well as UNSA student researchers: Smith Ollachica, Patrick Fernadez, Kevin Quispe, and Katherine Narvaez. The workshop introduced the group to the preparation of culture media and buffer solution and use of some online tools for the design of primers for gene cloning. Additionally, they learned about the cultivation of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, which is a small flowering plant used as a model organism for basic research in genetics and molecular biology.
