Nexus Institute Workshops / Talleres del Instituto Nexus

The Arequipa Nexus Institute for Food, Energy and the Environment (Nexus Institute) will launch its first specialized workshop series at Purdue. The Nexus Institute, is the flagship research and capacity building initiative of the cooperative alliance between Purdue University and the Universidad Nacional de San Agustin (UNSA) of Arequipa, Peru led by the Center for the Environment at the Discovery Park. From August 1st to 9th a group of 24 faculty experts from UNSA will participate in a series of specialized workshops supporting the sustainability science underway in the Nexus Institute

Purdue scientists and members of the Nexus will lead the workshops for their UNSA colleagues and co-investigators. 15 Workshop modules are planned that cover a wide range of subjects including; metrics of soil health and vulnerability, social science assessment methodologies, applications of environmental sensors, visual analytics for earth sciences, remote sensing, high performance computing, stable isotope and nutrient analysis techniques, and field methods for soil and water samples. The workshops will provide the opportunity to exchange of ideas, explore new technologies, and provide the technical foundations to further co-develop the Nexus research initiative. The stable isotope and nutrient applications and tools module is also designed to complement a proposal currently under review at UNSA, jointly written by UNSA and Purdue faculty, to create a new stable isotope biogeochemistry facility at UNSA to support the Nexus Institute research; UNSA participants will gain hands-on instruction in instrument operation, and application.

An interdisciplinary group of UNSA faculty and research scholars will be part of the Peruvian delegation in Purdue. Led by Dr. Henry Polanco, Dean of the College of Engineering at UNSA, and Co-Director Dr. Timothy Filley -Center for the Environment. The UNSA team includes biologists, agronomists, chemists, food scientists, architects, sociologists, economists, and other social scientists.

The Purdue members of the Nexus have been to Peru exploring and initiating the research projects hosted by their UNSA colleagues. Therefore, the visit of this large UNSA delegation is especial since it builds closer team collaboration between scientists of both countries as well as solidifies the nexus between both institutions, Purdue and UNSA. Along with the workshops, the participants of Nexus Institute workshops will have the opportunity to visit Purdue’s Agriculture research facilities, the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis, and a brief visit to the City of Chicago before their return to Peru.

El Instituto Nexus de Arequipa para la Alimentación, la Energía y el Medio Ambiente (Instituto Nexus) lanzará su primera serie de talleres especializados en Purdue. El Instituto Nexus es la iniciativa principal de investigación y desarrollo de capacidades de la alianza cooperativa entre la Universidad Purdue y la Universidad Nacional de San Agustín (UNSA) de Arequipa, Perú, liderada por el Centro para el Medio Ambiente en Discovery Park. Del 1 al 9 de agosto, un grupo de 24 profesores expertos de UNSA participarán en una serie de talleres especializados que apoyan la ciencia de la sostenibilidad en curso en el Instituto Nexus.

Los científicos de Purdue, miembros de Nexus dirigirán los talleres para sus colegas y co-investigadores de UNSA. Se planifican 15 módulos de talleres que cubren una amplia gama de temas, entre ellos; mediciones de la salud y la vulnerabilidad del suelo, metodologías de evaluación de las ciencias sociales, aplicaciones de sensores ambientales, análisis visuales para ciencias de la tierra, sensores remotos, informática de alto rendimiento, técnicas de análisis de nutrientes e isótopos estables y métodos de campo para muestras de suelo y agua. Los talleres brindarán la oportunidad de intercambiar ideas, explorar nuevas tecnologías y proporcionar los fundamentos técnicos para un mayor desarrollo conjunto de la iniciativa de investigación Nexus. El módulo de herramientas y aplicaciones de isótopos estables y nutrientes también está diseñado para complementar una propuesta actualmente en revisión en UNSA, escrita conjuntamente por docentes de ambas universidades, para crear una nueva instalación de biogeoquímica isotópica estable en UNSA que apoyará la investigación del Instituto Nexus; Los participantes de UNSA obtendrán instrucción práctica en la operación del instrumento y la aplicación.

Un grupo interdisciplinario de académicos e investigadores de UNSA formará parte de la delegación peruana en Purdue. Co-dirigidos por el Dr. Henry Polanco, Decano de la Facultad de Ingeniería de la UNSA y el Dr. Timothy Filley -Centro de Medio Ambiente. El equipo de UNSA incluye biólogos, agrónomos, químicos, científicos de alimentos, arquitectos, sociólogos, economistas y otros científicos sociales.

Los miembros Purdue del Instituto Nexus han estado en Perú explorando e iniciando los proyectos de investigación en colaboración con sus colegas de la UNSA. Por lo tanto, la visita de esta gran delegación de UNSA es especial ya que construye una colaboración de equipo más estrecha entre los científicos de ambos países y solidifica el nexo entre ambas instituciones, Purdue y UNSA. Junto con los talleres, los participantes de los talleres del Instituto Nexus tendrán la oportunidad de visitar las instalaciones de investigación de Agricultura de Purdue, la Feria del Estado de Indiana en Indianápolis, y una breve visita a la Ciudad de Chicago antes de su regreso a Perú.
