Soils are complex natural bodies that vary with depth and across landscapes. Visualizing and making sense of soils data from soil profile descriptions and soil maps, and making it accessible, is a significant challenge. We will describe two aspects of the work of the Soil Health and Environmental Vulnerability Assessment (SHIVA) team, namely, creating visualizations of soil profiles using data from written soil descriptions, and providing access to soil survey information for the Arequipa region via the Soil Explorer mobile app.
