Mentors key part of welcoming new students to campus

As new Boilermakers arrive on campus for Summer Start and Early Start programs, they are welcomed by many people in a short amount of time. But it is the work of a small group of students who can make the biggest impression over a collegiate career: student mentors. This year, 34 students are serving as mentors – 30 for Summer Start and Early Start, and four for visiting Purdue Polytechnic High School students.

In 2014, residents of Phoenix were asked to plant drought-tolerant plants to conserve water. But the change in vegetation actually made the air feel hotter, leading to residents using more air conditioning powered by water-generated electricity. The point: Without a better understanding of how climate change affects the connection between energy and water demand, environmental policies could do more harm than good.

Bringing Our Best

Thumbs Up: Jason FitzSimmons, Ben Bohlin, Dean Brusnighan

"On July 3, Purdue was able to launch the Health and Safety training for Summer Start and Early Start students. There were many staff, students and faculty involved in the development of the training content and their efforts are much appreciated. I want to highlight the work of Jason FitzSimmons, Ben Bohlin, and Dean Brusnighan, who truly went above and beyond at the last hour to make the dissemination of the training possible." – Heather L. Servaty-Seib (Office of the Provost)
