Men's basketball team wins Big Ten Tournament, receives No. 5 seed in NCAA Tournament

On the heels of the first Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament Championship in school history, Purdue received the No. 5 seed in the West Region of the 2009 NCAA Championship Tournament on Sunday. The Boilermakers will face 12th-seeded Northern Iowa on Thursday in Portland, Ore. More

Pedestrian-only phase to be tested at Stadium and Northwestern

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) this week will begin trial use of a new crossing pattern at Northwestern Avenue and Stadium Drive. A phase in the traffic light cycle will be added in which all vehicles at the intersection are stopped and pedestrians can cross in any direction. The INDOT news release can be found here.

New Madrid fault system may be shutting down

The New Madrid fault system does not behave as earthquake hazard models assume and may be in the process of shutting down, a new study shows.

A team from Purdue and Northwestern universities analyzed the fault motion for eight years using global positioning system measurements and found that it is much less than expected given the 500- to 1,000-year repeat cycle for major earthquakes on that fault. The last large earthquakes in the New Madrid seismic zone were magnitude 7-7.5 events in 1811 and 1812. More

Professor, students build scooter based on Tai Chi principles

Hands-free scooter
Motorized scooters controlled through the use of handlebars are a frequent sight on sidewalks, but a Purdue professor and his students have built a scooter that relies more heavily on the rider's sense of balance.

Henry Zhang, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering technology, along with four students, spent several months building a hands-free, two-wheeled, self-balancing scooter based on the principles of Tai Chi, a form of Chinese martial arts that centers on focusing the mind and staying aware of your center of balance. More

Purdue to host gifted students at summer camps

High-achieving students who have completed the fifth through 12th grades can take part in summer residential camps sponsored by the Purdue College of Education's Gifted Education Resource Institute in June and July. More

Abbott Nutrition sales competition at Purdue draws 23 students

A team of four students won $5,000 in scholarship money and an interview with Abbott Laboratories in the inaugural Abbott Nutrition sales competition at Purdue. More
