Environmental engineering event planned

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Pedro Alvarez, the George R. Brown Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rice University, will give the keynote address Feb. 2 at the 2018 Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors Distinguished Lecturer Conference.

The conference will work to bring researchers in the field of environmental engineering together to share their research findings through poster sessions and presentations. It is free and open to the public.

Alvarez was selected as the 2017-18 AEESP Foundation Distinguished Lecturer in recognition of his excellence as both a researcher and educator in the field of environmental engineering. He currently serves as director of the Nanosystems Engineering Research Center on Nanotechnology-Enabled Water Treatment at Rice University. His research focuses on environmental sustainability through bioremediation of contaminated aquifers, transport of toxic chemicals, water footprint of biofuels, water treatment and reuse, and more.

“This lecture series is a privileged opportunity to experience first-hand the diversity and positive energy of our environmental engineering and science community and to be inspired by the excitement and dreams of the many people I meet,” Alvarez said. “I am especially honored to be hosted by Purdue, a place known in environmental engineering for its rigor, relevance and commitment to excellence.”

Alvarez has won multiple awards for his work, including the 2012 Clarke Prize and the 2014 American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists Grand Prize for Excellence in Environmental Engineering and Science. He is on the advisory board of the National Science Foundation’s Engineering Directorate and is associate editor of Environmental Science and Technology.

The conference will be held 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Shively Club, Ross-Ade Pavilion, 850 Beering Dr., West Lafayette. Registration is available online at http://bit.ly/aeespdlc. Individuals who would like to be considered for an oral or poster presentation timeslot may submit their abstract at http://bit.ly/aeespdlc.
