Purdue to host first STEM education event of its kind on campus

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue will serve as the site for the first STEM education summit of its kind in the nation.

The National STEM Education Research and Practice Summit is slated for Oct. 16-17 in Stewart Center and is expected to draw education representatives from across the U.S. and around the world.

The STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) event is hosted by the Purdue Office of Engagement in partnership with the College of Education.

Carla Johnson, provost fellow for P-12 STEM and a professor of science education, is both creator and coordinator for the event, which is expected to attract more than 200 attendees to campus.

“Purdue is a global leader in STEM education and I wanted to take the lead in convening this group so that we can learn from each other and continue to improve our work and impact,” she said.

A major focus of the event is to look at STEM-focused schools and STEM teacher preparation and what the best models are for doing both, Johnson said.

There are three topical areas being covered in the National STEM Education Research and Practice Summit: STEM education research, best practice in K-20 STEM education and resources for STEM education.

The summit begins with an evening reception October 16, followed the next day by a full schedule of sessions running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Discussions cover a large variety of topics ranging from using engineering design to promote STEM learning to creating a network of STEM mentor teachers.

“We are a leader for sure. No one else is doing this type of work – convening others to come and share,” Johnson said.

This is the second large STEM education event hosted by Purdue and the College of Education. The annual Indiana STEM Education Conference has been held on campus the last two years, with the event returning again in January.

Registration is open until the conference is full or until the morning of the event. To register visit: http://www.cvent.com/events/national-stem-education-research-and-practice-summit/event-summary-f666e56740cb478aa7963f7728df20d5.aspx
