The Purdue Jewish Lecture Series announces fall lecture series

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. —Purdue University's Jewish Studies Program has announced the lineup for the 2016 Jewish Lecture Series.

The series includes the ninth annual Larry Axel Memorial Lecture. This lecture will be at 8 p.m. Sept. 26 in the Krannert Auditorium. Tzvi Novick, Department of Theology at Notre Dame, will be presenting "God in the Lab: Technical Expertise and Rabbinic Authority." Co-sponsors of the event include Purdue Jewish Studies and the Religious Studies Programs.

The Noon Lecture and Discussion Series includes three presentations:

* Sept. 21, 12:30 p.m., Beering Hall, Room B222. Jules Janick, James Troop Distinguished Professor of Horticulture at Purdue University, will speak on "A Kabbalah Sephirothic Tree, the New Jerusalem, and the Voynich Codex: Understanding a Bizarre 16th Century Manuscript of New Spain."

* Oct. 26, 12:30 p.m., Stewart Center, Room 313. Arman Kavalekar, winner of the 2016 Edward Simon Essay Prize in Jewish Studies, will present "Judaism Through the Eyes of Global Media."

* Nov. 16, 12:30 p.m., Stewart Center, Room 313. Hernán Matzkevich, graduate student studying Spanish, will discuss "Messianic Hope and Its Parody in Spanish Golden Age Theater."

The lecture series is free and open to the public. The Jewish Studies program is housed in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies in the College of Liberal Arts
