Purdue family programs help youth learn about veterinary medicine careers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University's College of Veterinary Medicine is offering several programs for families with young children that are interested in learning more about the veterinary medical profession. The programs are targeted toward children in grades K-4, but older children are welcome to attend.

The PVM Family Program Series will begin Oct. 6 and will continue once a month through April 6, 2017, with the exception of January and February. All programs throughout the series are free to the public, but registration is requested due to limited seating. In order to register, contact the Office of Engagement at pvmengaged@purdue.edu.

All sessions will be 6-7 p.m. at Lynn Hall of Veterinary Medicine, Room 1136.

Presentations throughout the series include:

* Oct. 6: "Veterinary Technology-Diagnostic Imaging," with Danielle Buchanan, chief medical technologist at the Purdue Veterinary Teaching Hospital, who will speak on veterinary technology. After her presentation, she will teach how veterinarians use radiographs to find out what’s wrong with an animal.

* Nov. 3: "Rabbit Wellness," with Lorraine Corriveau, wellness clinician at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, who will speak on how to keep rabbits healthy.

* Dec. 1: "Small Animal Internal Medicine," with Lynn Guptill, associate professor and co-section head of small animal internal medicine at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, who will speak on small animal health.

* March 2: "Stitch me up doc!," with Micha Simons, clinical assistant professor of small animal surgery, who will speak about her work as a veterinary surgeon. Following her presentation, participants will practice using surgical instruments and suturing.

*April 6: "Predicting Skeletal fracture in Racehorses – Scientific Collaboration Between Basic and Clinical Scientists," with Russell Main, assistant professor of basic medical sciences.
