25th anniversary of Purdue Jazz Festival kicks off with Chris Potter Underground

December 29, 2014

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue Jazz Festival's 25th anniversary will kick off with Chris Potter Underground, who will perform at 8 p.m. on Jan. 16 at Purdue University's Loeb Playhouse.  This performance is presented by Purdue Convocations.

This performance also includes a free pre-show discussion for ticket holders at 7 p.m. Don Seybold, host of "Inside Jazz" on WBAA, and pianist Judd Danby will discuss Chris Potter Underground in Stewart Center, Room 314.

Saxophonist Chris Potter has been a longstanding collaborator with a who's who of jazz, including Herbie Hancock, Jim Hall, John Scofield, and Paul Motian, as well as multiple Purdue engagements with both Dave Holland and the Mingus Big Band. He has appeared on over 100 albums as a sideman and 15 albums as a leader, but his recurring project, Chris Potter Underground, has emerged as fertile and imaginative.

Potter's Underground bandmates include drummer Nate Smith (also a Purdue Jazz Fest veteran with Dave Holland’s groups), bassist Fima Ephron, and guitarist Adam Rogers.

This performance serves as Purdue Convocations' annual contribution to the Purdue Jazz Festival, a Purdue University Bands event that brings more than 2,500 middle and high school students to campus for clinics and concerts with noted jazz artists and clinicians. The festival will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2015.

Tickets are $26 for adults and $19 for children 18 years and younger, Purdue students and Ivy Tech Lafayette students. Tickets are available at the Stewart Center box office at 765-494-3933, 800-914-SHOW or online through www.convocations.org/tickets
