Honored international, U.S. films to show on campus

February 27, 2014

A world of award-winning, Oscar-nominated and critically acclaimed movies will parade across the screen at Purdue during 30 days starting Friday (Feb. 28) in Global Film Fest '14, presented by Asha for Education's Purdue chapter and OMEGA, the Official Mechanical Engineering Graduate Association.

The film showings, all free and open to the public, will include short and feature-length works from at least 10 countries. All films not in English will have English subtitles.

All events in the festival, which is subtitled "A Festival of Hope," will be in Krannert Building's Krannert Auditorium (Room 140). Since all will occur outside hours of enforcement for regular (A, B, C) parking permits, most spaces in the nearby Wood and Marsteller parking garages will be available.

Showings are scheduled for three Friday evenings (Feb. 28, March 7, March 28) and two Saturdays (March 1, March 29). The Saturday schedules have multiple sessions with lunch and tea breaks. Food and drink will be available for sale, and proceeds will support Asha's efforts to advance education of underprivileged children in India. Donations are welcome. More about Asha is at www.ashanet.org.

Featured on the first weekend are:

* Feb. 28: The acclaimed drama "Ship of Theseus" from India.
* March 1: Afternoon showings of all 10 nominees for 2014 short film Oscars, both live action and animation.
* March 1: Evening showing of "A Separation," the Oscars' 2011 Foreign Language Film winner from Iran (with Iranian Cultural Club).

Expected films on other dates are "12 Years a Slave," "The Great Beauty," "The Girl Rising," and "The Colors of Mountains." The schedule will be updated as arrangements are confirmed.
