Deductible will be waived on all preventive prescription drugs for 2014

November 8, 2013

Human Resources has announced that all three 2014 Purdue medical plans will waive the deductible on brand-name preventive prescription drugs. Originally, the deductible for these drugs was going to be waived only on the Purdue Health Plan.

"The change will simplify coverage and encourage employees to follow the preventive medication recommendations of their physician," says Eva Nodine, director of benefits in Human Resources. See the chart below for details about the employee's cost for each preventive drug category.

Employees will still pay less by using a generic preventive drug because prescriptions in this category are provided at no cost to the employee on all three 2014 medical plans.

In addition, the "member pays the difference" rule still applies. Under this rule, if a generic is available, but the employee uses a brand-name drug instead, the employee will pay the cost difference between the brand-name drug and the generic, in addition to the coinsurance listed in the chart.

The employee's portion of a preventive drug's cost, including any "member pays the difference" amount, does not count toward meeting the employee's overall medical plan deductible, but will count toward meeting the employee's out-of-pocket maximum.

The Express Scripts website at www.express-scripts.com/purdue reflects the deductible change and should give an accurate estimate of the employee's cost for a specific drug. Anyone who has already enrolled for 2014 and wishes to make a change may do so through EBenefits by the 6 p.m. (ET) Nov. 15 end of open enrollment.
