2010 Felker series to focus on military families

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Challenges that military families face during deployment is one of the topics that will be presented during the 2010 Felker Leadership Series at Purdue University.

"Families Facing Challenges" is April 16. Registration is 8-9 a.m. and the program is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost for attending the program and lunch is $40 per person. It is $30 for just the program. Students can attend the program and lunch for $10, and there is no charge for students attending the talks only. Registration and payment must be made by April 7. The speakers represent Purdue's Military Family Research Institute and the departments of Communication, Child Development and Family Studies, and Health and Kinesiology. Topics include helping military children and youth meet the challenges of parental deployment and marital communication during and after military deployment. The event also will include an overview of the Military Family Research Institute (MFRI) and Operation Diploma, an MFRI initiative launched through a $5.8 million gift from Lilly Endowment Inc.

The Felker Leadership Series celebrates the 15th anniversary of the Center for Families and the 10th anniversary of the Military Family Research Institute. The annual series honors the contributions of the late dean Donald W. Felker, who served as dean of the College of Consumer and Family Sciences from 1987 until his death in 1992.
