We are pleased with your interest in our graduate program. Before you continue with the electronic application for admission, we wish to ensure that you are familiar with the minimum requirements for admission to graduate degree study in Food Science.

It is important to recognize that although satisfaction of these basic requirements does not guarantee graduate admission, failure to satisfy these requirements may lead to automatic denial of admission.

If you do not meet the basic requirements described below, please do not submit the electronic application until you have contacted our graduate program coordinator.

Supporting Documents: Additional documents are required to support the application. Supporting documents should be uploaded to the online application or mailed directly to the graduate program to which you are applying, as directed below. Click the links below for details. Supporting documents include the following, unless specific instructions are noted in the requirements sections of this page:

Completing the Application:

Codes for GRE:  Purdue code is 1631. The Food Science code  is 0107.
Codes for TOEFL:  Purdue code is 1631. The Food Science code is 31.

Current master's students wishing to move to a doctoral degree program in this same graduate program will not be required to submit a new application.

Master's Degree Program

Domestic Applicants

  • Undergraduate Cumulative Grade Point Average:
       3.0 or equivalent required
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE):
       Minimum Score Required: (before 8/2011) Verbal 400, Quantitative 500, Analytical 4.0
    (after 8/2011) Verbal 146, Quantitative 144, Analytical 4.0
  • Resume and Purpose Statement
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Official or unofficial transcripts – Official transcripts must be submitted to Graduate School upon admissiom
  • Two copies of B.S. diploma – One submitted to Food Science graduate program and one submitted to Graduate School upon admission

International Applicants

  • Undergraduate Cumulative Grade Point Average:
       
    3.0 or equivalent required
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE):
       
    Minimum Score Required: (before 8/2011) Verbal 400, Quantitative 500, Analytical 4.0
    (after 8/2011) Verbal 146, Quantitative 144, Analytical 4.0
  • TOEFL for Non-Native English Speakers:
        Minimum Internet-Based Test (IBT) Overall Score Required: 77
        With the following minimum section requirements:
        Reading: 19
        Listening: 14
        Speaking: 18
        Writing: 18
  • IELTS (TOEL alternative) - 6.5 or higher will be accepted
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) (Academic Module):
       An alternative to the TOEFL, scores of 58 or higher will be accepted  
  • TWE for Non-Native English Speakers:
      
    Required -- minimum score of greater than or equal to 5.0. If iBT is taken, TWE is not required.
  • Resume and Purpose Statement
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Official or Unofficial Transcripts – (attested copies will not be accepted) Language of instruction and English translation required.  Official transcripts must be submitted to Graduate School upon admission
  • Two copies of B.S. diploma – One copy should be in the language of  instruction and the other an English translation. One set submitted to Food Science graduate program and one set submitted to Graduate School upon admission   

Doctoral Degree Program

Direct Doctoral from Bachelor's Degree Program

Candidates interested in the Direct Doctoral from Bachelor’s Degree Program must obtain Food Science Graduate Committee approval.

Domestic Applicants

  • Resume and Purpose Statement indicating direct Ph.D from Bachelor's Degree consideration
  • Three letters of recommendation indicating direct Ph.D from Bachelor's Degree consideration
  • Official or unofficial transcripts from B.S. and M.S. degrees – Official transcripts must be submitted to Graduate School upon admissiom
  • Two copies of B.S.and M.S. diplomas – One submitted to Food Science graduate program and one submitted to Graduate School upon admission
