A recording of Provost Jay Akridge's Protect Purdue virtual conversation from Monday (July 26), which focused on Fall 2021 updates, is now available for viewing. This series of conversations was initiated last fall to answer faculty and staff questions and to keep the campus community updated on the Protect Purdue Plan.

New Purdue research building will offer a world’s first in hypersonic testing, materials development

Imagine an aircraft flying 2,800 miles across the United States in only 15 minutes. A state-of-the-art building ready for construction at Purdue will provide the facilities to explore that idea through advanced hypersonic research. The planned 65,000-square-foot Hypersonic Applied Research Facility will house two cutting-edge wind tunnels, enhancing Purdue’s world-leading capabilities in hypersonics evaluation and testing.

Dark mode may not save much battery life, but there are silver linings

When Android and Apple operating system updates started giving users the option to put their smartphones in dark mode, the feature showed potential for saving the battery life. But dark mode is unlikely to make a big difference to battery life with the way that most people use their phones on a daily basis, says a new study by Purdue researchers. That doesn’t mean that dark mode can’t be helpful, though.

Purdue's Sautter retires — again — after 50 years of innovation, dedication

The first time John Sautter retired from Purdue, back in 2010, his retirement lasted all of one day. This time, Sautter promises it’s permanent. Sautter, 76, will retire on July 30 after five decades of service at Purdue that includes nearly 40 years as vice president for housing and food services and 11 years as a University ambassador. He leaves behind a legacy of enduring impact on students and their campus experience.

Designing a pathway to support student innovation

Greg Strimel saw a void and set out to fill it. With a nationwide concern about innovation capacity and transformative learning experiences, Strimel, an assistant professor in the Department of Technology Leadership and Innovation, along with his colleagues developed and launched a minor in design and innovation in 2018.
