Purdue trustees approve 2021 health plans; three consumer-driven plans available for 2021

Purdue’s Board of Trustees on Friday (Aug. 7) approved 2021 health plans, aligning with the university’s strategic approach to health care and the Healthy Boiler Program initiative. The changes for 2021 were approved as part of a multiyear strategy and the ongoing pursuit of improving population health and controlling overall costs for employees and the university.

#PurdueWeDidIt: 2020 Summer Commencement

Nearly 1,400 of Purdue’s newest graduates heard their names called during the University’s summer on-demand commencement. Purdue alumna Marjorie Magner, a founding member and partner of Brysam Global Partners, provided the commencement keynote, and Aaron B. Benjamin of Haddonfield, New Jersey, served as the student responder (at 1:21:14 mark). In the photo: Some summer graduates returned to campus to take photos to mark the occasion.

Computational model could improve drug development process

About 50% of people who take the drug infliximab for inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn’s disease, end up becoming resistant or unresponsive to it. Scientists might be able to catch problems like this one earlier in the drug development process, when drugs move from testing in animals to clinical trials, with a new computational model developed by researchers from Purdue University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Augmented reality tool shown to help surgeons remotely guide medics

War zones can be too far from operating rooms, preventing soldiers from receiving the surgery they need fast enough. A Purdue University-led study is the first to show medics successfully performing surgery in life-like simulations of these war zones by receiving guidance from surgeons through an augmented reality headset. The work is joint with Purdue's School of Industrial Engineering and the Department of Computer Science.
